Hinckley, UK, 26th November 2007: Triumph Motorcycles today announced strong sales and continued positive growth for the 2007 financial year, which ended on 30 June 2007.

Group turnover rose by 10% from GBP 200 million (USD 400m) to GBP 220 million (USD 440m). In the year under review, sales of Triumph motorcycles rose by 10% to 41,125 units. The operating profit, before interest and tax, grew by 22% to GBP 12.6 million (USD 25.2m).

The launch of the Triumph Tiger in late 2006 and the continued success of class leading machines such as the Daytona 675, Speed Triple and Rocket III, plus the enduring popularity of Triumph’s retro classics, have all contributed to this strong sales performance.

Tue Mantoni, Commercial Director comments: “Triumph has grown steadily year on year for the last few years, which has given us a very solid business platform. This year’s figures continue the trend, despite tougher conditions in the US market, and demonstrate clearly that Triumph continues to be a dynamic and profitable business.”

Mantoni continued: “A significant contribution to our growth in sales stems from the successful launch of new products and the work we have done with our global dealer network. The consistent, positive performance allows us to continue to invest strongly in R & D and also to attract stronger dealers, who are crucial to deliver our vision of providing outstanding customer experiences.”

The strategic focus for 2008 remains sustainable and profitable growth. Triumph’s 2008 financial year has started strongly with the successful launch of two new models. The new Street Triple has redefined the middleweight streetfighter class, while the most recent addition, the Rocket III Touring, provides consumers with the ultimate machine for long distance touring.

In 1978, cinemas were playing Superman and Grease. I believe a movie ticket was probably less than a cheesburger at todays prices and there was no air conditioning, only ceiling fans. Most people in Malaysia had only black and white television sets, if they could afford a TV set at all. In Iran, a revolution was beginning. Telephones had rotary dials, not buttons. There were only two television channels (RTM1 & RTM2). No one had mobile phones, computers or internet. LED watches were being produced but consumed battery power at an unbelieveable rate. Believe it or not, technical students who couldn’t afford scientific pocket calculators (also LEDs, no LCD back then) used ‘Slide Rules’ to perform calculations!

Over in South Korea, the Hyosung Motors & Machinery Company was incorporated. They began by producing license-built Suzuki motorcycles, and after establishing an R&D centre in Hamamatsu, Japan, started selling their own designs in 1987. Hyosung’s GV650 Anniversary model commemorates the start of the Hyosung company. Finished in black and red, the main tubular frame elements are highlighted in red while the rest of the bike is finished in a rather sinister black.

Power comes from an EFI 650cc V-twin, with an output of 80bhp and 67 Newton-metres of torque. Transmission is a 5-speed, with belt drive to the rear wheel.

Hyosung motorcycles are manufactured in Changwon City, South Korea, and earlier this year, Hyosung Motors and Machinery Inc. was acquired by S&T Group – one of South Korea‘s biggest corporations with a global turnover of more than £4 billion. The manufacturing company is now called S&T Motors. S&T Motors employs over 500 people and exports to over 60 countries. Producing scooters, motorcycles and ATVs from 50cc to 650cc, it has a target to become one of the world’s top five producers. In Malaysia, this particular motorcycle is manufactured under licence by Naza Bikes.

The Goodwood Revival, the world’s most authentic historic motor race event, is set to encompass an exciting new dimension to its race programme for 2008. A fresh grid of motorcycles and legendary top riders are set to star in a ‘new look’ Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy for 1950s motorcycles.

In the Goodwood Motor Circuit’s racing heyday, between 1948 and 1966, there was only one dedicated motorcycle meeting – ‘Goodwood Saturday’, held in 1951. Taking inspiration from this 1951 event, the ‘new look’ Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy will be representative of this original meeting – including machines such as the Matchless G45 and Vincent Grey Flash. From 2008 onwards the motorcycle race at the Goodwood Revival will alternate annually between this newly-introduced 1950s race and the familiar competition for 1960s machines – such as the Manx Norton 500 and Matchless G50 – as is already the case for the popular St Mary’s Trophy for saloon cars of the 1950s or 1960s.

Goodwood will also introduce significant revisions to the overall race format. As before, there will be one race on Saturday and another on Sunday, with the result decided by aggregate timing. The difference in 2008 will be that each owner-rider will be paired up with a professional racer, and both will ride in each race, changing over in the pits around half distance. Plans are also afoot to introduce a Le Mans-style running start, which is certain to cause some drama and excitement for both spectators and competitors alike.

To meet the new eligibility criteria, motorcycles will have to be of a type that competed in the period 1951-1954, in the spirit of the original Goodwood race meeting. Marc Márquez & Harald Bartol

KTM has announced the recruitment to Grand Prix racing for the 2008 season of 14-year old Spanish talent Marc Márquez. The announcement was made at the final Grand Prix of the 2007 season at Valencia, Spain. Márquez will join the planned Team Repsol KTM with Alberto Puig as Team Director and Emilio Alzamora as Marc‘s personal consultant. Alzamora, a former world champion has been the young rider’s mentor at his Monllau Road Racing School.

In 2007 the young rider has been competing in the 125 cc class of the Spanish championships where he excelled in some races and finished eighth overall, exhibiting enough all-round talent to catch the attention Winfried Kerschhaggl, head of KTM Motor Sports, and KTM Grand Prix Technical Director Harald Bartol.

“I am very happy about this opportunity,” Márquez said. “The KTM is a very fast, well handling motorcycle and I will do my very best to get the results that the team and the manufacturer deserve. I know it’s going to be tough to compete with the best of the world, but at the same time, I am very excited and can’t wait for the new season to start!”

Alzamora said his young charge had a lot of potential and expressed his thanks to Harald Bartol, Winfried Kerschhaggl and Cesar Rojo from KTM Spain for creating the project. “I am very happy about this structure with KTM motorcycles, with backing from Repsol and with Alberto Puig as Technical Director,” he added.

Winfried Kerschhaggl said the project with Marc Márquez is in line with KTM’s philosophy. “We have brought countless riders to the top In Motocross and Enduro racing and we are determined to do the same in Grand Prix racing. Marc has been with us for a year now and his achievements in the Spanish Championship justifies opening the doors to the World Championship,” he said. “I believe Emilio Alzamora is the ideal person to guide him as he goes into the Grand Prix series. I am sure Marc will be very successful.”

The latest recruit to the orange world of KTM was born in Cervera, Lleida in 1993. Weighing in at just 40kg, he lists Motocross and Supermoto as his hobbies and MotoGP’s Dani Pedrosa as his hero. On board his first Enduro machine at the age of just five, he has been competing since he was six years old. He was vice champion in Motocross Iniciación Catalunya in 2000 and won the championship the following year. Other highlights in his young career include:
