Take a look at the build process of these Speedway bikes built right here in Malaysia by Scuderia Kelana, an outfit run by Raja Norzaini, an individual well-known in the field of motorsports here in Malaysia as a race fabricator with experience in helping support the preparation of the 12 hour Merdeka Millenium Endurance race-winning Honda Civics (with K20 Type R powertrains) for 2004 and 2005, with help from Team Kunimitsu and Japanese racing shops Mooncraft & Honda tuner Mugen (MTEC). Recently Scuderia Kelana ventured into the fabrication of Speedway bikes.

Speedway bikes are a unique type of motorcycle and are governed by FIM‘s “Track Racing Technical Rules“.

Speedway Motorcycles must:
- Weigh over 77kg
- Use a 4-stroke single cylinder engine
- Have guards fitted over moving engine parts where reasonable
- Use an additional chain guard to prevent a hand or finger/s being cut by a chain
- Have a peg fitted to prevent a broken chain flailing and injuring a rider or a fellow competitor
- Use shatter resistant plastics where reasonable
- Be fitted with a dirt deflector
- Be fuelled by methanol

Speedway Motorcycles cannot:
- Use a supercharger in any form
- Be constructed in any part from titanium
- Use uncoated ceramic parts
- Use telemetry during a race except for timing purposes
- Use any electronic components to control the engine
- Use brakes of any form

That last rule is quite scary isn’t it?

The frame is made up of steel tubes which are tack welded in a specially made jig.

These subframes bolt on to the main frame. The subframe holds the rear axle, sprocket, etc.

After being tacked and checked for dimensional accuracy the Speedway bike frame is fully welded using a Miller TIG welder. Good weld penetration is critical at this stage.

The completed frames don’t look like much at this stage, but these are the main ‘skeletons’ for the Speedway bike’s engine, transmission, suspension and other bits to bolt on to.

The engines are from the Czech Republic, manufactured by Jawa. The Jawa engines are 500cc units with an output of 70 bhp burning methanol. Notice that they have very little in the areas of braking, and that the suspension consists basically of rubber bands with dampers?

Speedway bike frames must flex just right and need to be stiff enough to have just the right grip. It must have traction on the starts and be loose enough to be able to steer/slide in the corners. The frame needs to have just the right balance between stiffness and the ability to flex.

To Scuderia Kelana, the ability to match over 40 years of development and experience by other Speedway bike manufacturers is a truimph by itself. Speedway bikes are some of the most ‘niche’ bikes to be used in the world of motorcycling. The tiny fuel tank holds 100% methanol.

The bikes seen here raced in the FIM International Cup recently held on the 27th Oct 2007. The international riders – from New Zealand, England and Japan said that the bike is as good maybe better than the currently available speedway bikes. In the motorcycling world, the only motorcycle to approach the legendary status of the Volkswagen Beetle or Mini would have to be the Honda Cub.

The Honda Cub debuted in 1958, about 10 years after Honda Motor Co. was established. Honda‘s biggest advantage was producing a small, efficient 4-stroke engine while competitors at the time were almost all using 2-stroke engines which required higher maintenance. Honda used the slogan “You meet the nicest people on a Honda” to break into the tough US and European markets, as well as the newly independent British colonies like Malaysia which were dominated by British marques.

The competitive pricing, ease of use, extremely low fuel consumption, cheap maintenance costs, low emissions and toughness made the Honda Cub a worldwide hit. While oil barrel prices keep skyrocketing, remember this: a Honda Cub gives you 146 kilometres per litre (340 MPG)!

Quite a few of the most famous bike builders in the world have come out of Holland and Jan Kampen is one of them. He’s been specialising in Aermacchi tuning, with one of the foremost Aermacchi sites on the net – www.aermacchi-racing.com.

One of his most famous bikes to be featured on the site and elsewhere on the net is his “Ultimate Single” Aermacchi special. Jan Kampen can build an Aermacchi special to suit a customers needs. For the powerplant, you can choose a 250, 350, 400, 430 or even 500cc air-cooled Aermacchi single cylinder. These give outputs of 25 to 51 brake horsepower. The transmissions can be built with 4, 5 or even 6 speeds!

The front suspension is an upside down telescopic fork which looks like it came off a Cagiva Mito 125cc! It comes with a 4-piston caliper, 320mm brake disc rotor Brembo setup. At the rear is a 240mm disc brake. The bike weighs 109-112kg (dry) and Jan Kampen can offer just about any colour a customer requires.

The chassis is based on the Metisse rolling chassis and its critical parts are made with modern technology in order to make it a reliable retro-classic. Three variants will be made available or you can buy it as a kit, to build your own Aermacchi Streetfighter Special.

“We were trying to offer it for road use. but it it to expensive to build because it is an racing bike with extras like lights and standards and so on.” – Jan Jan. The yellow Aermacchi special seen here with a very tasty looking blacked out powertrain is Jan Kampen‘s personal road bike.
