Reuters has reported that Team Fiat Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi will pay US$51 million (35 million Euros) in tax for the years 2001-2006. The case came about due to the fact that Rossi was living in London but still spent time in Italy. The former MotoGP champion, a winner of seven world titles, could have faced a bill for up to 112 million Euros (US$163 million) but described that was “a threat to start talks”.

Rossi’s tax problems caused a stir in Italy when news broke last August. It has been alleged that his advisors had assured him they had respected the rules when filing his taxes, but Rossi has since parted company with his manager. “I am happy with how this issue has been resolved. It is a high figure but it is more important to be calm, serene and happy,” he told a news conference on Tuesday in his home province of Pesaro on Italy’s east coast. Rossi has decided to return to Italy.
