“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, the latest and 4th Indiana Jones movie to hit the big screens is now running in cinemas. The movie stars Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Karen Allen, Ray Winstone, John Hurt, Shia LaBeouf AND … Harley-Davidson!! Apparently H-D modified five 2007 Harley-Davidson Softail Springer Classics to look 50ish and supplied them for the movie. Bike fans will spot the front disc brake during the chase scenes, where the bike is used by Mutt Williams (LeBouf), a Harley-riding greaser and Indy (Ford) to escape KGB baddies. The chase scene culminates in the bike sliding across floors in a library, which was filmed at Yale. The fun doesn’t stop there as the bike is then transported by air to Peru where Indy and Mutt continue their adventures. Harley-Davidson will display two of the Indiana Jones Softails at the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Museum, in Milwaukee from July 12th.

Just after posting on some exotic Ohlins suspension for a small bike, the Kawasaki KSR110, I received a mail this morning with the following highly contrasting attachment. It says ‘Harley Palanchao‘ on the watermark, and I believe these bad boys (I don’t see any licence plates!) were shot in the Philippines. These guys are on ‘Flintstone‘ style zero emissions bikes, but if you look closely there’s some sort of foot-operated braking mechanism. I suppose these bikes were built for downhill racing of some sort. All I can say for now is … ‘Harley Palangchao!’ with my sincerest apologies to HD as I was not the one to put that word in there. Peace!

US-based two-wheel devotees are invited to the third annual Japanese Motorcycle Saturday at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum on June 7, 2008. Located on the campus of the American Motorcyclist Association in Pickerington, Ohio, a few miles east of Columbus, the Museum is the country’s premier showcase of motorcycling heritage and history. Over 400 enthusiasts and nearly 200 Japanese motorcycles of all styles, including new and vintage sportbikes, café racers and tourers, are expected to gather at the Museum for Japanese Motorcycle Saturday.

Whether visitors ride in on a classic Japanese motorcycle or simply stop by to glimpse machines showcasing decades of design and engineering, the event is sure to please all motorcycling aficionados. Highlights of Japanese Motorcycle Saturday include a non-judged bike show and seminars. Fiat Yamaha riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo travel to the legendary Le Mans circuit this weekend looking to continue their trailblazing start to the 2008 MotoGP World Championship after dominating the headlines over the opening four rounds. The pair have three pole positions, seven podiums and two wins to their credit so far – securing leadership of the Teams’ and Constructors’ World Championships and delighting their army of fans around the world.

The last round in Shanghai was their most impressive yet, with Rossi reaping the fruit of a blossoming relationship with Bridgestone tyres to take a dominant first victory of the season and Lorenzo producing a heroic charge to fourth place on his Michelin-shod YZR-M1 despite fracturing both of his ankles during free practice.

The Spaniard, who lies second in the championship, faces another huge test of his mental and physical resistance this weekend after being confined to a wheelchair ever since his return home from China. The damage to his ankles will take months to fully heal but Lorenzo has no more time to put his feet up, with seven races coming thick and fast over the next ten weeks as the season enters its busiest phase. The 21-year-old at least has fond memories of Le Mans, having taken victory there from pole position last season.

Rossi has had five podium finishes in the premier-class at Le Mans, including two victories. The Italian’s success in China was his 89th in all classes of Grand Prix racing, taking him to within just one of Angel Nieto, who lies second in the all-time winners’ list behind Giacomo Agostini.

Le Mans is one of the least technical circuits on the calendar, with the main complication being the first turn – one of the fastest in MotoGP – which is followed by the first of a number of tight chicanes. The rest of the track is made up of short straights and hairpins, calling not just for balance and control under hard and repeated braking, but a neat and swift transfer from full braking to full acceleration on the exit of the corners.

“Last year Le Mans was incredibly disappointing for us – we were hoping for a good result in the dry but the rain came and things didn’t go as planned. This year however we’re going there on a real high after the fantastic result in China and I am confident that we can have a good weekend. China was a very important boost for everyone and a great result for all the hard work that everyone has put in so far this season to get us to this point, and now we have to make the most of this moment and keep pushing like this. Yamaha usually goes very well at Le Mans and, although it’s obviously the first time we’ve been there with Bridgestone, I am confident that we will be strong there. We are nine points from the top of the championship but our rivals are very motivated too so there is no let-up and we must go for the maximum points again. This is the start of the busiest phase of the championship and it’s always hard work but also great fun. Let’s hope we can get this run of races off to the best possible start in France

“Le Mans is the start to a very busy period for the championship but on the evidence of the race in China we are ready! Shanghai was a very important race for us because it showed how much progress we have made since Qatar. With seven races over the next ten weeks this is the core of the championship so the timing of Valentino’s first win of the season couldn’t have been better. Four different winners from the first four races is fantastic so now let’s see who can be the first to repeat. We all feel positive it can be us and we can’t wait to fight for it. In 2006 we almost won at Le Mans but for a technical problem and last year we were denied by the rain so we feel we have unfinished business there and we look forward to fighting again.”

If I’d have landed differently it could have ruled me out until the middle of the season and certainly prevented me from enjoying myself as much as I am in this early part of the season. In China I realised the risks in this sport; as riders we have to take a lot of risks and that Sunday in Shanghai, with my emotions and my feelings, I knew I had to go through it and take risks again because my team were depending on me in the box. I won’t be at 100% for Le Mans but my mental condition should make me strong at one of my favourite circuits and I am really looking forward to the race just the same. I know my team will help me all that they can and hopefully I will be in good enough shape to challenge strongly, as I have at the first four races. China was unfortunate but now I have to move on!”

“Obviously Jorge is a little more injured than we first realised in China and the broken astragalus in his right ankle is a problem but we’re hopeful he can be fit enough to fight again in France. At the moment there is not much we can do but wait for the most recent updates from Doctor Mir and see how he feels when he gets on the bike on Friday. As far as learning the track with this bike is concerned we have seen in the previous two races that this is not an issue for Jorge, particularly at Shanghai, where he effectively only had only one free practice session. Le Mans is traditionally a ‘friendly’ track for Yamaha, who have had a lot of good results there in the past. We’re at the start of an intense period of GP activity and the next few months will be interesting. For us the most important thing is to stay concentrated.”

Schuberth GmbH has announced that multiple Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher (reported to be racing on two-wheelers here) will be spearheading the firm’s development of sports motorcycle helmets.

Beginning with the ‘Schuberth Race’ helmet, Michael will continue to bring his wealth of experience to the Schuberth’s R&D department in order to develop new models. This arrangement continues a unique and extensive partnership between the German brand and the seven-time F1 champion who developed and used Schuberth helmets until he retired from the sport. During his excursions into the world of motorbike sports the most successful Formula 1 world champion of all times trusts in a Schuberth product, the specially developed “Schuberth RACE”. As head tester he is going to be involved in the development of the new Schuberth motorcycle helmets going forward.

Schuberth’s engineers have developed this new crash helmet in close collaboration with Michael himself. In true Schuberth style, the result is an extremely lightweight and aerodynamic helmet, filled with numerous technical and safety innovations.

Since leaving four-wheel competition, Schumacher has failed to resist his passion for all things fast and loud. The German’s longstanding love for motorcycles has seen him enter pro-amateur races in Europe, picking up a debut win in just his second event. Schumacher explains the continued relationship: ‘Throughout my time in Formula 1 I really appreciated just how fast and accurately the people at Schuberth were able to work. Attention to detail has always been particularly important to me, and I don’t intend to leave anything to chance in the future either.’

In changeable weather conditions and across a tricky Sevlievo circuit, Yamaha Monster Motocross Team‘s David Philippaerts scored his first success on the YZ450FM with first and second positions in the two motos at the Grand Prix of Bulgaria. After four rounds of fifteen in the 2008 FIM MX1-GP World Championship the Italian has extended his lead in the series to 17 points and also placed Yamaha first in the manufacturer’s standings. Josh Coppins was sixth overall and currently lies third.

The hard and fast layout situated deep in the Bulgarian countryside offered two different tests to the riders of the MX1-GP category as the first moto of 35 minutes and 2 laps took place in sunshine but a grey sky and rainfall created a slick and greasy terrain for the second outing.

Philippaerts made the most of two decent starts to obtain his prize. The 24 year old escaped the attentions of Billy Mackenzie and Marc de Reuver to lead the first sprint from start to finish. In the second wetter race he fought with Jonathan Barragan and was ultimately unable to match the Spaniard’s pace. Entering the last lap Philippaerts was resigned to his second consecutive runner-up position until the leader crashed and allowed Sebastien Pourcel and the Yamaha representative to pull through. Second spot in the moto was enough to secure the overall and his second career MX1-GP success.

Josh Coppins ended the day disappointed with sixth position but a set of average starts and some hesitancy on the first lap of Moto1 meant that a better placing was not possible. The Kiwi qualified quite well, (Philippaerts was eighth after being baulked on his two flying lap attempts) with the sixth best lap-time on a dry track that saw the protagonists of the class separated by very little. However he was, by his own admission, ‘too slow’ in the opening stages of Moto1 and although he pulled through the pack well and was all over the back wheels of Marc de Reuver and Barragan contesting second place, he crossed the finish line in fourth. The second moto was even tougher as he touched with his team-mate along the start straight and had to be determined to cut through from a mid-pack position on the first lap.

The course was not easy for overtaking, making Coppins’ job even harder; he took 14 points for seventh at the flag. The 31 year old is still well in touch with the title chase.

Yamaha Van Beers‘ Aigar Leok was 17th, one place ahead of UTag Yamaha.com‘s Carlos Campano.

The world championship table still shows both Yamaha Monster Motocross team members within the top three. Philippaerts holds a bigger margin over world champion Ramon and Coppins is 34 points away. Yamaha head the manufacturer’s standings by 5 points. The squad are well-placed for round five and their home Grand Prix at Mantova in Italy next week.

“This is a really good result for me. I tried to win both races but Barragan was very fast in that second moto and I had some luck when I saw him crash. I was pretty tired by that point and I could not stop Pourcel taking the lead. The track was very different in the afternoon. The rain had made it very slippery and some more lines appeared. The mud went softer and got bumpier. The bike is really good and the team are working hard. I’m happy for this; a good day!”

“I thought that things would turnaround for me this weekend but I am really disappointed with how the motos went. My starts were not good, which is unusual for me, and I was too slow at the beginning of the first moto. I wanted to do better for the second moto but David cut across me coming out of the gate; that’s OK though because I would have done the same if I also had the holeshot. I was stuck in the middle of the pack and by the time I passed riders there was too big a gap to rise any further. This is not what I wanted ahead of Mantova, which is perhaps the hardest track of the year for me and I am losing my patience; it has been a hard start to this championship.”

“A very good weekend. David won the GP with some luck, thanks to Barragan’s crash. He was already looking quick and motivated through the practice sessions and playing with the bike but found two slower riders in the Timed Practice that ruined his laps. Anyway, he still got the starts from eighth in the gate. Josh was fourth in the first race which wasn’t so bad and his speed in the last ten minutes was very good. His start was a handicap and he could not find his pace like before. The bikes performed well and the riders felt good; we just need to understand why Josh couldn’t get going in that second moto.”
