BMW’s HP2 is equipped with brand-new DOHC cylinder heads!
MUNICH, JANUARY 2008. BMW Motorrad achieved a new sales record in 2007. After the 100,000 units were sold for the first time in 2006, BMW was able to continue its growth in 2007 with sales of 102,467 units (previous year: 100,064/+2.4%). The record figures represent the peak of BMW Motorrad’s ongoing successful course to date.
Once again it was the Western European markets which made the biggest contribution to this outstanding result. With the German market generally declining, sales figures here were somewhat below those of the previous year (2007: 21,504; 2006: 23,617/-8.9%). However, BMW Motorrad was able to expand its market leadership both in the market over 500 cc (2007: 20.4 %; 2006: 19.8%) and in the market as a whole (2007: 19.2 %; 2006: 18.5%). The second strongest market for the company was once again Italy with 14,424 units sold, followed by the US (12,094 units) and Spain (10,382 units).
The most successful model in 2007 was once again the travel enduro bike
BMW R 1200 GS together with its sibling model, the R 1200 GS Adventure. Due to the imminent model revision, 2007 figures were slightly below those of the previous year as expected. (2007: 30,077 units, 2006: 31,138 units)
Prospects for 2008
The BMW Motorrad model program for 2008 is as broadly varied as the wishes and preferences of our customers. In the four worlds of experience Sport, Tour, Urban and Enduro there are fascinating motorcycles to suit every taste, each supplemented with an extensive range of accessories as well as the matching rider equipment.
The new BMW R 1200 GS and the new BMW R 1200 GS Adventure will already be available from dealers from the end of January.
On March 8th BMW Motorrad celebrates the official start of the season. On this day, the new 2-cylinder models BMW F 800 GS and BMW F 650 GS will see their sales debuts. The market entry of the new medium category travel enduro BMW F 800 GS, an all-rounder with outstanding off-road and long-distance qualities, is being anticipated with great excitement. The new F 650 GS, worthy successor to the popular single-cylinder entry-level model, is now fitted with the state-of-the-art parallel twin with its unique construction.
Also on March 8th, the BMW HP2 Sport will thrill all flat twin “Boxer” fans. This motorcycle, developed through deployment in endurance racing, puts genuine racing technology on the road and features a brand new dohc cylinder head.
In the second half of 2008 the new sports enduro BMW G 450 X will round off the model program.
Wolfgang Schlimme, if you’re reading this, PLEASE bring the HP2 Sport to Malaysia!

BMW Motorrad produces the R1200RT and R900RT as a specific emergency services variant. These bikes are produced by BMW Motorrad’s official and special duty vehicles division. A great site to look at for more information is the one by Jeff Dean.
You can find more information, download brochures in PDF and check on specifications on the official BMW Motorrad site too.
BMW police motorcycles were used in the CHiPs ‘99 ‘movie reunion’ of the 1977-1983 American television series, CHiPs, which revolved around the adventures of two California Highway Patrol officers.

Win the chance of a ‘Roads to Morocco’ trip of a lifetime
The R1200GS Adventure, available in dealerships from 26 January
To celebrate the release of the new R1200GS and GS Adventure, BMW Motorrad is offering a place on this year’s best-selling World of BMW “Roads to Morocco” tour to one lucky rider and pillion.
Visitors to BMW Motorrad dealerships from 26 January to 15 March will have the opportunity to enter the draw. The winner will receive two places on the April tour giving the opportunity to explore this spectacular and enchanting country on a new R1200GS motorcycle.
The eagerly anticipated uprated BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure models will be available for test rides in BMW Motorrad dealerships from 26 January onwards. The new models benefit from a range of improvements, including styling changes, a more powerful engine, new gearbox, revised gear ratios, and a new Enduro version of BMW’s unique ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) system.
* New Enduro ESA – the original ESA system was first launched on the BMW K1200S sport tourer model, and an uprated Enduro ESA has now been developed for the R1200GS and GS Adventure with pre-load adjustment of the front suspension unit for the first time. The Enduro ESA is incredibly easy to use, enabling the rider to adjust the suspension of the bike, to suit load or terrain, by simply pressing a button on the handlebar controls.
* New more powerful engine – the new engine offers more dynamic drive with increased power in the upper half of the rev range. The engine power on the new models has been raised by 5%, from 100 to 105 bhp, coupled with revised gear ratios to give a stronger spread of power.
* New dynamic look – the fresh and dynamic look of these motorcycles emphasises their enduro attributes through the use of stronger styling elements. With new stainless steel tank deflectors on the 1200GS aligned with features such as the anodised slide tubes and cylinder-head, the new GS’s continue the bestselling bike’s reputation for strong, original, and innovative design.
BMW Motorrad Marketing Manager, Tony Jakeman said, “BMW Motorrad is offering this fantastic trip of a lifetime to Morocco to mark the arrival of the new R1200GS and Adventure in BMW dealerships on 26 January. The models are ideal for adventure motorcycling, with the new ESA enabling riders to make on-road to off-road suspension adjustments at the click of a button – perfect for covering Morocco’s vast Atlas Mountains and desert passes. Interest in the iconic, up-graded GS models has already been high so we expect our dealerships to be very busy satisfying requests for test rides from the end of January onwards.”

In a press release, MV Agusta has announced the sale of its brand Husqvarna to BMW Motorrad. Below is the full statement from MV Agusta Group.
PRESS RELEASE
“BMW Motorrad will acquire the renowned off-road motorcycle company Husqvarna Motorcycles. The President of MV Agusta Group, Claudio Castiglioni, and Dr. Herbert Diess, General Director of BMW Motorrad, signed the contract on 19th July 2007 in Varese (Italy). The contractual agreement will come into full effect upon final approval of the EU cartel authorities. Both parties agreed that the purchase price is to remain confidential.
For the Italian motorcycle Group, the sale of Husqvarna Motorcycles is a strategic step to concentrate all of its resources in the development of MV Agusta brand, icon of style and performance and Cagiva, historical brand in the low engine capacity segment.
Upon the signing of the agreement, the President Claudio Castiglioni stated: “This transaction has been carried out in order to expand MV Agusta and Cagiva presence in the international markets having more financial resources for new models development, thanks also to the support of Banca Intesa Sanpaolo.”
Claudio Castiglioni added: “Husqvarna is steeped in tradition and one of the most famous motorcycle companies in the world with numerous racing victories including European and World titles, and under the directions of BMW Motorrad it will continue to express its full potential.”
BMW Motorrad plans to continue operating Husqvarna Motorcycles as a separate enterprise. All development, sales and production activities, as well as the current workforce, will remain in place at its present location in the region of Varese in northern Italy.”
The sale is expected to allow the MV Agusta group to bring a new focus to MV Agusta and Cagiva products and will strengthen both brand’s customer appeal and lead to continued growth globally.
