Indian Motorcycles of Gilroy, California finally managed to secure the famous ‘Indian’ brand name, which by then had passed through a succession of owners who each claimed they owned it. The Gilroy Indian motorcycle company began manufacturing bikes from 1999 after purchasing the Indian trademark. The engines used were from S&S.

In July 2003, the movie Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, commonly known as T3 opened in the US and around the world, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. For a chase scene, Indian built a police bike, which is seen here. Based on Indian Chiefs, with hard saddlebags, the bikes feature police paintjobs, 100 cubic inch (1638cc) 45-degree OHV, air-cooled, single carb V-twin engines, five-speed transmissions and a belt final drive. Deeply valanced fenders and the lighted Indian head logo ensure that anyone looking at this bike won’t be mistaking it for a Harley. The rear suspension featured a single damper design. 16-inch wheels with four-piston Brembo disc brakes completed the Indian Chief.

Sadly in 2003, Indian Motorcycles of Gilroy went bankrupt after talks with a major investor fell through. The latest, newest Indian company is owned largely by Stellican Ltd., and plans to resurrect the Indian brand from its new factory in North Carolina, but that’s another story.
